In implant dentistry, metal-ceramic restorations show the longest scientific documentation. Metal as core material provides good mechanical properties and gives support to a thin veneering layer. However, manufacturing process of metal-ceramic restorations can be time consuming, technique sensitive and costly. This has led to development of CAD/CAM procedures and materials. CAD/CAM ceramic materials specifically provide high accuracy, esthetics and strength, together with cheaper manufacturing methods. Additionally, the development of titanium base abutments enables fully digital workflow for producing implant-supported restorations, however long-term clinical evidence of these restorations does not exist yet.
There is a constant introduction of novel materials and treatment techniques for manufacturing implant-supported fixed prostheses. Survival rate and possible technical and biological complication rates should play a role when choosing a material. With this foundation, clinicians must critically consider all novel products and techniques from a scientific perspective, focusing on clinical and laboratory data published in peer-reviewed journals. The presenters of this session will review the current state of science and present relevant data for materials used for manufacturing implant-supported fixed prostheses in different clinical situations.
