New trends: from osseointegration to soft-tissue integration

In the beginning was osseointegration, and osseointegration was thought to be sufficient for long-term successful implant rehabilitation. With time, it became clear that soft-tissue integration is of paramount importance and that formation of an early and long-standing effective barrier capable of biologically protecting the peri-implant structures is mandatory.

Recent studies have confirmed that, from the aspect of long-term maintenance as well as for the area requiring esthetics, the presence of an appropriate amount of KT is required. Long-term success starts with a correct implant positioning in adequate supporting bone and an effective soft-tissue barrier capable of biologically protecting the peri-implant structures. Nevertheless, Periodontally Compromised Patients (PCP), even though achieved optimal plaque control, may need further therapy to limit the nature and the extent of biological complications throughout their lifetime.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this lecture, the participant will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of both correct implant placement and excellent patient’s compliance as prerequisites for long-term success.
  • Select the proper augmentation procedures in the different situations where needed.
  • Introduce an appropriate Supportive Periodontal Therapy program in the clinical practice to enhance implant long-term results, especially in PCP.
