Implant therapy considerations for the elderly patient

Abstract:

As life expectancy increases, dentists are faced with managing their patients into more advanced age. This raises questions regarding appropriate, effective and future proof treatment approaches including implant therapy to maintaining aesthetic and functional dentitions for the older patients. This lecture will examine planning considerations and strategies aimed at fulfilling these objectives. The presentation will also discuss the specific roles of contemporary innovations in implant designs and treatment protocols as well as the importance of incorporating back-off strategies for future simplification of restorations to reduce both handling and maintenance demands from both the patient and professional perspectives.

Aims & Learning Objectives:

  • summarise the dental challenges of caring for the older patients
  • describe age related planning considerations for implant therapy
  • discuss relevance of contemporary implant innovations and treatment protocols for these age groups
  • discuss importance of back-off strategies for future proofing of implant therapy
