Between tradition and modernity

A walk through Basel is like a stroll through time: in hardly any other city do 15th century buildings complement internationally renowned modern architecture to create such a contrasting yet harmonious cityscape. The narrow streets and hidden squares with over 180 fountains as well as the many centuries-old buildings and eye-catching sights such as the City Hall or the Cathedral combine to make Basel's Old Town one of the most beautiful in Europe.

40 Museums from historical to contemporary

Nearly 40 museums with world renowned exhibitions – this is unique in Switzerland and top class by international standards. Our museums offer something for every taste, and some have even written history. For example, the Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Museum of Contemporary Art) was the first of its kind. And the Kunstmuseum Basel is regarded as one of the oldest public art collections in the world.

Architectural eye catchers

Besides its many 15th century buildings, Basel is home to the celebrated architectural duo Herzog & de Meuron as well as numerous key contemporary buildings – and the number is continuously increasing. Around one third of the Pritzker Prize holders have designed buildings for Basel and the city attracts many young architects.
